William C. "Billy" Bugg's Obituary
William C. Bugg (Billy) – A Life of Passion and Devotion
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William C. Bugg, affectionately known as Billy, who left us on September 8th, 2024, at the age of 73. Billy’s final moments were spent at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents William and Betty Bugg. He is also survived by his cherished wife of 50 years, Kathy Bugg of Bartlett, and his beloved daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, Ashley Bugg Brown (Marques), and Aiden and Harper, who brought immense joy to his life.
Billy is also survived by his siblings—his sister Cheryl Max (Larry) of Atoka, Brenda Witherington (Sid) of Germantown, and Fred Bugg (Leslie) of Memphis. His extended family includes numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends, along with his treasured relic hunting partners who shared in his passion and adventures. He also leaves behind furry loved ones—his precious dog, Tess, and his “granddog,” Roxie. He will be excited to see his pups gone before him: Taylor, Roo, Pugsley, Muffin, and Manfred.
Billy’s heart and soul were deeply invested in his love for history and metal detecting. As a proud member of the Memphis Metal Detecting Club, he earned the title of Treasure Hunter of the Year five times, with his most recent accolade being awarded just last year. His enthusiasm for uncovering and preserving history was evident in his impressive collection of Civil War relics. Among his most prized possessions was a Confederate Breckenridge belt plate, discovered in 1993 in LaGrange, TN, alongside his favorite relic hunting partner, Sid.
In the past Billy was actively involved in the Bartlett City Beautiful and Historical Society, dedicating his time and energy to enhancing his community and preserving its rich heritage. His contributions left a lasting impact.
Billy’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. His warmth, dedication, and passion for history will be deeply missed. In celebrating his life, we remember a man who was a devoted family man and friend and a passionate steward of history.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 12th at 2:00 pm at Atoka Methodist Church, 609 Atoka-Munford Ave, Atoka, TN.
