William A. Rogerson's Obituary
William A. Rogerson, 69, passed away April 25, 2014. Bill was born on July 28, 1944 to Sidney and Nina Rogerson. He was raised in Roundup, MT. He was a popular and ambitious youngster who decided he wanted to be a pilot when he was two years old. He graduated from Montana State College with a degree in mechanical engineering. ROTC prepared him to join the Army, where he learned to fly. He was very proud to fly “the Mohawk” in Vietnam. When Cpt. Rogerson completed his tour of duty, he moved to Huntsville, AL in hopes of becoming a commercial pilot. In the meantime, he taught flying lessons, where he met Bettye Bergin. They were married for 37 years. Bettye preceded him in death in 2010. Bill was hired by Southern Airlines and thus began his illustrious career, which brought the couple to Memphis. Bill continued to serve his country in the Reserves, attaining the rank of Colonel. Bill loved his time with the airlines; the camaraderie of Airline personnel, the travel, and his personal project where he invited children into the cockpit before the flight, giving them wings, letting them wear his captain hat, taking their photo, and printing “Jr. Cpt.” Certificates that he mailed to their home. Bill received the distinguished “Presidents’ Award” in 1999 for superior contribution to the success of Northwest Airlines. After retirement Bill continually gave his time and money to charitable causes; chauffeuring the church motor-coach, volunteering for Blue Suede Shoes, serving as a mentor with Big Brother Association, and delighted in making dreams come true through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Bill became an avid sports fan attending many Grizzlies and Tigers games with his special friend Pat Tanner, always coming home to his beloved poodle, Cyd. He was a SUPER uncle to all of his nieces and nephews, never missing their special events. He honored them with his presence and extravagant presents. Bill is survived by a brother, two sisters, seven nieces and nephews, Cyd the dog, and many other friends- too numerous to mention. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. A reception will follow. The family requests any donations be sent to Make-A-Wish Mid-South 1780 Moriah Woods Blvd. Suite 10, Memphis, TN 38117 Any cards or letters of condolence for the family may also be sent to: 2467 Regents Walk, Germantown, TN 38138
