Wanda Jeanne Cole Sweeney's Obituary
Wanda Jeanne Cole-Sweeney, 95, passed away on July 3, 2022.
Wanda was born on November 21, 1926 in Mitchell, Indiana. She was the youngest daughter of Charles and Anna Cole and her father’s favorite.
Wanda grew up and was educated in that same small town till she graduated from high school in 1944.
If you have a hard time picturing a small Indiana town high school, mom would say, “It’s just like that movie Hoosiers.” She had also known Virgil ‘Gus’ Grissom in high school. Gus would go on to be one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts. She was proud of her home and its annual Persimmon Festival, but Mitchell was not big enough for Wanda.
Wanda earned a nursing degree from Methodist Hospital of Indiana in 1951 and was married to Lawrence Anthony Sweeney that same year. By the time dad had passed away in 2000, they had seen a lot of this big world together. Five children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren later, and a life helping others Wanda left this world a little better place. We knew her best for hugs, words of kindness, quick wit and fierce love of her family. Thanks mom.
Surviving are her five children: Tim Sweeney, Terry Sweeney and his wife Pam, Sharon Sweeney-Pallme, Susan Sweeney-Franjac and Sandy Sweeney-Harris. Grandchildren: Patrick Sweeney, Brennan Sweeney-Adrian, Anna Pallme, Carter Pallme, Daniel Franjac, Ryan Harris and Lauren Harris. Great-grandchildren: Corinne and Evaline Adrian
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, July 8 at 9:00 a.m. with a funeral service to follow at 10:00 a.m. all in the Riverside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the Sweeney family asks that a donation be made to St. Jude in Wanda Sweeney’s name or the charity of your choice.
