Walter Neubauer's Obituary
Willie Mae Scott Gary passed away on February 24 after a long and rich life. Her children arise up, and call her blessed. Prov. 31:8. She is survived by two daughters Nancy Gary Wilkes of Nashville, TN, Ellen Gary Terhune of Memphis; grandchildren Denise Wilkes McMillan, Phoebe Wilkes Hoover, Lydia Wilkes Kennedy, Matt Terhune, Jason Terhune, Jessica Terhune Anderson, Andrew Terhune and 18 great-grandchildren. On July 22, 1919 Willie Mae Scott Gary was the sixth child born to Willie Nash and Robert Roy Scott in Horn Lake, MS where her father was a dairy farmer. When she was six months old she moved with her family to Memphis, TN where she attended Idlewild Elementary, Fairview Junior High and Central High School. She maintained friendships with two of her friends from Fairview her entire life. These friends joined her at her joyful 90th birthday party. After graduation from Central High School she worked at College Specialists Bureau. In 1939 she married Oscar Kirk Gary. In the early years of their marriage they lived in Charleston, SC where he worked as a pattern maker at the naval shipyard. After the war ended Willie Mae and Kirk moved back to Memphis, TN where they lived the rest of their lives. They were members of First Evangelical church where Willie Mae worked with Pioneer Girls. Willie Mae and Kirk enjoyed traveling. While their daughters were young they traveled to our western states. When their children were grown they enjoyed traveling to Mexico and Europe. After Kirk’s passing in 1986 Willie Mae traveled with friends. Her travels took her to the Holy Land, Yugoslavia, and Canada. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling Lewis and Clark’s route on an Elderhostel trip. Although Willie Mae later worked for College Specialists Bureau in Memphis her real love was homemaking. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, preparing delicious meals and gardening. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Prov. 31:28. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:30-1:00 with funeral service to follow at 1:00 at the Riverside Chapel at Memorial Park Funeral Home, Memphis, TN.
