Walter Love Gibson's Obituary
Walter Love Gibson, 93, of Memphis, TN passed away peacefully January 4, 2017 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN. He died of natural causes after suffering from a long term illness. He had an extended stay in the hospital and skilled nursing care since last October. A longtime resident of Memphis, but his “roots” were in the Mississippi Delta community of Indianola, MS. His date of birth was February 19, 1923. Walter and Glyn Alice have spent the last two years locally in the “honey moon” suite at Foxbridge Assisted Living Facility. He is survived by Glyn Alice Pressgrove Gibson, his Proverbs 31 wife, helpmate and one and only sweetheart of +69 years in marriage. Their six children were Virginia Gibson, Judy Gibson Tullos (Temp) of Memphis, preceded in death were Charles Gibson and Gary Gibson, Dean Gibson of Memphis, and the caboose Lisa Gibson Doyle (Mark) of Bartlett. His six grandchildren were Adrian Tullos, April Tullos Egan (Bruce), Adam Tullos, Zachary Doyle, Hannah Doyle and Savannah Doyle. His two great grandchildren were Jacob and Hunter Egan. As so eloquently described by Tom Brokaw, Walter was truly a member of the GREATEST GENERATION of the WWII era. After completing high school, he attended Moorhead Junior College. Having NEVER ventured outside of his local community, he worked as a cotton farmer. In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army serving in the European German operations with the Allied forces. His primary responsibilities were driving a jeep and taking messages to the frontlines later receiving an honorable discharge for three years of faithful service. Afterwards he returned home to Indianola, where he attended TTI (Trade Training Institute) connected with Mississippi State helping Veterans learn a trade. He married Glyn Alice on December 20, 1947. In 1950, their family moved to Memphis, and he went to work at the Sears, Roebuck & Company. He retired from Sears after working at the Crosstown and Broad Street locations for over forty years as a service technician. Throughout his life he continued his love of farming by tending a garden each year at the Senior Gardens at Shelby Farms. He was a member of Cherokee Baptist Church of Memphis where he served as an usher. He made an early profession of faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ while attending Roundaway Baptist Church in Indianola, MS.
