W. George Walters' Obituary
W. George Walters died Wednesday, February 13, 2019, with family by his side. He was born November 14, 1930, in Reading, England. George came to the United States at the age of 16 and served our country as a Ranger in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of Germantown Presbyterian church and where he worked with the youth . George attended Memphis State and worked for Wurzburg, Inc. for 47 years. He was the Vice President of Sales. George and Amanda moved to Germantown in 1964. His love of Germantown was demonstrated by his service to the community. He organized the first Christmas parade in Germantown, coached little league, and helped organize youth sports for the Park and Recreation Dept. He chaired many committees for Germantown like zoning appeals. As Chairman for the factfinding committee, George helped bring the first hospital to Germantown. The Lions Club honored George as the Man of the Year for his community service. He was also honored as a Germantown Hero in 2000. He was involved with the Germantown Festival for many years and served as President . He had a role in GHS TV and the scholarship committee benefiting students at Germantown High School. He dedicated much of his time to the arts. He served as President of the Germantown Community Theater and was instrumental in the establishment of the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC) to include organizing the Gala for the grand opening of the center. In support of the Tennessee Shakespeare Company, George served as their Chairman the first year. He was awarded the Germantown Arts Alliance Award for Leadership. George didn’t meet a stranger. He was a hard working man, who loved his community and his family. George is survived by his loving bride of 55 years, Amanda Newbill Walters, by two sons, James Melvin Walters (Beth) of Hixson, TN, and Herschel Raymond Walters of Millington, TN, and a daughter, Renee Walters Davis of Collierville, TN. George also leaves four grandchildren, Amanda Brasser , Wesley Walters, Grant Walters, and Olivia Davis, as well as two great grandchildren. He also leaves Julie McAdoo.Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar, Tuesday, February 19, from 5:00-7:00 PM. The service will be held on Wednesday, February 20 at 12:30 PM. “A Fitting Farewell for Everyone”In lieu of flowers , the family would appreciate donations made to Germantown Presbyterian Church.
