Virginia "Ginny" Sloan Towner's Obituary
Virginia “Ginny” Sloan Towner, 90, died peacefully on August 24, 2022, at home, surrounded by loved ones. She was defined by her deep faith and devotion to her family. Born on October 12, 1931 in Strawberry, Arkansas to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Comfort Sloan, Ginny was the youngest of six children.
She came to Memphis to attend Hutchison School where she was voted the innagural Ideal Hutchison Girl. Following high school, she completed her education at Randolph- Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia.
In 1954, she married Dr. Justin Towner, making their home in Memphis and raising three children: Jud Towner (Kathleen), Sloan Germann (Luke), and Laurie Haddow (Dan). Together they have seven grandchildren: Laurence Towner, Buck Towner (Katherine), Edey Maranto (Chett), Ginny Germann, Ruthie Germann, Mary Haddow, and Sam Haddow, along with three great- grand daughters. Her grandchildren adored “Gigi” and fondly remember quality time with her, accompanied by laughter, encouragement, and her delicious caramel cake.
A member of several service organizations and a faithful volunteer, Ginny served at Second Presbyterian Church primarily in the Martha/Mary circle, as a Sunday school and Bible study leader, and as a contributor to the Altar Guild. She was quick to deliver a meal and fresh flowers from her garden to those in need.
Known for her warmth, sharp wit, and ability to connect people through her gift of hospitality, Ginny was a remarkable witness for her Savior, Jesus Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Larry Sloan, Kathryn Kellow, Margaret Ledbetter, and Mabel Williams. She leaves behind her husband of 68 years, three children, seven grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, her brother Tom Sloan (Mary Evelyn), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Neighborhood Christian Center, Second Presbyterian Church World Missions, or the charity of your choice. Her family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care given by Tia Franklin, Niconna Minor, Denise Surber, and Christina White.
There will be a service of celebration for Ginny’s life at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, August 29th at Second Presbyterian Church. Visitation, beginning at 11:00 a.m., will precede the memorial service.
