Virginia Mangum Tate's Obituary
Virginia Mangum Tate was born on October 2, 1918 and she left this world peacefully on January 9, 2015. Virginia was a graduate of Southwestern (now Rhodes College) with degrees in French and English and she retained a lifelong love of books. She was a member of Les Passes’, Les Passes’ Fine Arts Club, Thalia Circle of the Kings Daughters, Chapter B of the PEO Sisterhood, the Summit Club, the University Club and the Memphis Book Club. She was also a founding member of the Memphis DABBS. Virginia was very active in the Episcopal Church Women at Holy Communion Church and served as president of that group. She later became a communicant at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. After raising her children, she worked for ten years as a social worker with the Tennessee Department of Human Services. Most importantly, Virginia was blessed with a gift for happiness which she shared freely with her friends and family. A world traveler, she will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her bristling enthusiasm, her beautiful smile and her southern charm.Virginia was preceded in death by her parents Virginia Lee and Harry Mangum and her beloved husband Alvan Tate. She is survived by three daughters: Harryette Bailey (Wes) of Tunica, Mississippi; Evelyn Baker of Memphis, Tennessee and Gina Tate and husband John Plummer of Knoxville, Tennessee. She leaves six grandchildren: Wesley Bailey III of Memphis; Al Bailey (Jennifer) of Cordova; Michelle Alexandre (Joe) of Memphis; Craig Baker of Fairfax, Virginia; Anne Martin (Kevin) of Hernando, Mississippi and Justin Plummer of New Orleans, Louisiana. Her legacy also continues through her seven great grandchildren.The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Allen Morgan Nursing Home and especially the loving staff of Crossroads Hospice and Palliative Care. Virginia’s life and that of her family were enriched by their compassion and their respect for the dignity of human life.Visitation will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday January 12th from 9AM to 10AM. The funeral service will follow immediately. Pallbearers are Wesley Bailey, Al Bailey, Craig Baker, Justin Plummer, John Plummer and Kevin Martin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Les Passes’ Rehabilitation Center, St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral or a charity of your choice.
