Virginia Cook Hollon's Obituary
Virginia Cook Hollon died peacefully on December 3, 2025 at Trezevant Manor in Memphis, Tennessee. She was 103.
Virginia Frances Cook was born on December 5, 1921 in McComb, Mississippi to Floyd Miskell Cook and Harrilee Harvey Cook. After graduating from McComb High School, she attended Mississippi State College for Women.
In 1943, she met William Henry Grumbles of Dunellon, Florida at a USO dance in McComb. He was stationed at a U.S. Army base nearby. They married on May 28, 1944 and moved to Memphis, Tennessee. They were founding members of Christ United Methodist Church, where Virginia maintained her membership for 70 years. Her interests included Christ United Methodist Women (President) and the Administrative Board (Secretary) of the church. She was a member of The Women’s Exchange of Memphis, Les Passees, Daughters of the American Revolution and a dedicated volunteer at the Church Health Center of Memphis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Grumbles, in 1966, their daughter, Marie Elise Grumbles, and son, Allen Cook Grumbles.
She was married to Hugh Estes Hollon of Montgomery, Alabama in 1969, until his death in 1978.
She is survived by her daughter, Judith Grumbles Crawford (Howard), and her sons William Henry Grumbles, Junior (Julia) and John Floyd Grumbles (Susan). She was beloved by her 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. In the past year, she welcomed two great-great grandchildren to the family.
A private burial for the family will be held at a later date at Memphis Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The Trezevant Foundation, Memphis, Tennessee; or to Madonna Learning Center, Germantown, Tennessee.
