Virginia Bateman's Obituary
Virginia Ruth DeVerger Bateman, born December 7, 1924, died Friday, May 20, 2011 from injuries sustained from a fall. Ruth was the daughter of Benjamin and Mae Belle Patrick DeVerger of Pleasant Hill, IL. She is preceded in death by her son, Douglas Ramsey Bateman, and her husband, Elbert Earl (Al) Bateman. She leaves her four children: Beverly Bateman Crosby, Ed (Judy) Bateman, Brad (Carol) Bateman and Bruce (Lorna) Bateman. Ruth is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Ruth served in the U. S. Coast Guard during the final years of WWII. While stationed in Newport News, VA, she met her future husband, Al, who was serving in the U.S. Navy. A devoted church member, she taught Sunday School for many years during which she nurtured and loved all children in her care and shared her love of God, which was reflected in every aspect of her life. Her life exemplified the virtues of kindness, faithfulness, selflessness and unconditional love. Ruth always chose to look for the very best in every individual she encountered and was a calming presence in every situation. Although Ruth loved flowers, she would have preferred that any memorial donations in her honor be made to the Ronald McDonald House or the charity of the donor’s choice. Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery on Poplar Avenue on Sunday, May 22 from 5 – 7 pm, with memorial service to be held at same location at 2:30 pm on Monday, May 23.
