Viola Stone's Obituary
Viola Alice “Ting” Stone, 90, under the care of her family, friends and hospice, passed away at her home on April 9, 2010. Ting was born in Webster Groves, M0 in 1919 on June 6, the anniversary of her father’s birth. In her earliest years, she pronounced “Sing-a-Song of Sixpence” as “Ting-a-Tong..,” creating the name by which she would be known the rest of her life. During the Great Depression, her father moved the family to South Texas in search of work. There, Ting met Thomas Earl Stone, Jr., who was nicknamed “Bump” for his aggressive style of playing halfback in high school football. Ting and Bump were married in 1944. She was a devout Roman Catholic and attended daily mass at The Church of the Resurrection until her final illness. For 40 years, she served her family Sunday lunch; then, as sports fans, they enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Braves on television. Ting, a widow since 1989, is survived by her sons, Thomas Rollan Stone (Lynn) of Germantown, Gary Lee Stone (Pat) of Rock Hill, S.C.; loving grandchildren, Cameron Stone Roberts (Bill), Wilson Thomas Stone; both of Memphis, Megan Lynn Stone of Asheville, N.C., Kelly Mabry Stone and Kevin Matthew Stone of Rock Hill. Ting also leaves a great-granddaughter, Callie, of Rock Hill. Another great-grandchild is expected in Memphis this year. Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m., Saturday, April 10, 2010, with a graveside service to follow at 3:00 p.m., all being held at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. Donations may be given to The Catholic Church of the Resurrection or to a charity of the donor’s choice
