Vernon N. Short, Jr.'s Obituary
Vernon Short, a resident at Kirby Pines since 2012, passed away April 20, 2018. Vernon, a third generation Shelby Countian, was born in Memphis on the eve of the Great Depression, grew up in the Forest Hill – Winchester area and graduated from Germantown High School and Memphis State College with special interests in office management and music. After four years of active duty in the Navy, encompassing the Korean War, he returned to his native Memphis. Following a year in advanced training in stenotypy and internship at Florida Central College, he returned to Memphis a second time and worked as a court reporter for 45 years, retiring in 1999. In addition to his work in the courtroom, Vernon also served as a church organist and retired from the Naval Reserve. His interests included classical music, grandfather clocks, animal welfare, and phonography. He loved his family and friends and his greatest interest was doing for others. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents Vernon Neely Short, Sr. and Dorothy Skinner Short, and a special close family friend, Charles K. Jones, Jr. He is survived by his brother, William Short; nephew, Steven Short; and nieces, Laurie Lea Short and Leslie Short Blake. Family and friends will gather to celebrate Vernon’s life on May 4, 1 pm, at Memorial Park Funeral Home (5668 Poplar Ave.) in the Mausoleum Rotunda, followed by a 2:30 pm reception at Kirby Pines (3535 Kirby Rd.).
