Vernes Shipman's Obituary
Jack Shipman, age 99 years, 11 months, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the Evergreen Health and Rehab Center in Rector, Arkansas.Mr. Shipman was born September 11, 1909 in Newark, Arkansas where he spent most of his early life. He spent many years working for Jewell Tea Company, first in Jackson, Tennessee as a route salesman and a much longer period in Memphis as a stock room manager. He later worked for Memphis City Hospital in supply from which he retired.Mr. Shipman loved serving as an Elder at Macon Road Church of Christ in Memphis, beginning in 1955 and continuing for many years, often teaching Bible classes. For most of these years, he resided at 3676 Wayne Ave. in Memphis.He was preceded in death by his parents: J. H. Shipman and Alice Bray Shipman; his first wife, Ruby Seward Shipman and his wife of later life, Gwendolyn Dameworth Shipman; four brothers: Chestine, Elbert, Roy, and Ewing; two sisters: Velma Dugger and Veda Boultinghouse.Mr. Shipman is survived by one son, Robert Alex Shipman of Collierville and one daughter, Donna Shipman Conley and her husband, Chuck of Paragould, Arkansas; one brother, Chester Shipman of Fayetteville, Arkansas; four grandsons: Joel Conley and his wife, Lisa of Germantown; Jon Conley and his wife, Katie of Kingston Springs, TN; Daniel Shipman and his wife, Kristy of Bartlett, and Alex Shipman of Collierville. Also six great grandchildren: Savannah, Polly Kate, Ella, Charlie, and Grace Conley and Katelyn Shipman.Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 28th at the chapel in Memorial Park with Robert Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Memphis Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Friday.Memorials may be made to the Macon Road Church of Christ, Paragould Children’s Home, Freed-Hardeman University Bible Dept., or Legacy Hospice of Northeast Arkansas in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.
