Thomas Jefferson White's Obituary
Lifelong Memphian Dr. Thomas J. White III, 74, died Friday morning. Dr. White is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Carol Pickens White, his mother Sarah Boothe White, his daughter Dr. Suzanne White Howell, his son Thomas J. “Jeff” White IV, son-in-law John Esselstyn Howell, daughter-in-law Brandi Wilson White, and grandchildren Jack Esselstyn Howell, Audrey Grace Howell, Thomas Jefferson “Jay” White V, and Graham Wilson White. Dr. White is preceded in death by his father Dr. Thomas J. White, Jr. Dr. White III is a graduate of Central High School (’58) and Rhodes College (’62) and earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis (’67). As a radiologist with the Regional Medical Center, the Veterans Administration, and as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Dr. White dedicated much of his life in the service of the Memphis community and the greater Mid-South. Dr. White also served as an officer in the United States Air Force medical corps, stationed at Dyess Air Force Base, TX. The White family are members of Church of the Holy Communion, and Dr. White has been a long-time and active member of the Memphis Country Club. Dr. White was an avid sportsman who especially enjoyed duck hunting in the flooded woods of NW Arkansas, fishing, playing tennis, and windsurfing. Dr. White played the bass guitar and was a member of the Doctors Band. At Rhodes College (then Southwestern at Memphis), Dr. White lettered in tennis, golf, track and field, and cheerleading, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday, November 30 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a reception to follow at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family has asked that any memorial gifts be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
