Thomas Wallace Shaffer's Obituary
Thomas Wallace Shaffer, 86. Died October 27, 2011, at his home in Cordova, Tennessee with his loving wife of 39 years by his side. Mr. Shaffer was born January 27, 1925, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Walter and Anna Wallace Shaffer. A WWII veteran, he went into Normandy on a glider three days before the invasion. As a sergeant, he marched behind Patton across Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge and fought until the war’s end. He worked as an environmental engineering manager for a number of chemical companies and excelled in his line of work. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He enjoyed cooking, building model ships and discussing his war experiences with family and friends. Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife Gwendolyn Johnson Shaffer, three children: Wendy Shaffer of San Francisco, Wayne Shaffer (Melinda) of Rochester, New York and Janna Shaffer Hamaker (Jonathan) of Seattle, Washington; three grandchildren: Corinne Shaffer, Colin Shaffer and Joed Hamaker; and one sister, Geraldine Shaffer Markin, Bowie, Maryland. He was preceded in death by one sister, Dolores Shaffer Blevins and one brother, Walter Clinton Shaffer, Jr., Farewell Thomas W. Shaffer. You made a real difference in this world. The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm until service time at 4:00 pm, Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
