As a relatively new member of Shady Grove Presbyterian, it was my great privilege to get to know Ed in recent times, my only regret being that I did not have the opportunity to know him longer. In all my interactions with him, he exuded grace, strength, openness, and a welcoming spirit that reflected the light of Christ. I will miss him. I pray that Marie and the rest of the family will be comforted in this time of great loss, and the in the midst of their grief will awaken to many opportunities to celebrate his life and legacy.
I will never forget his inadvertent outing Fran and I secret marriage. I was thumbing home from VPI and he saw me and stopped to talk. Then called Marie to let her know that he had seen me and she called Mom only to find out that I was not there. There went our secret.He will be greatly missed.
Ed Johnson was elder at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church during as time I served as its pastor. As minister of that wonderful congregation, I could not have asked for or received a more supportive, positive and strong leader than Ed. There was never a time when he was not only ready to help with one or another project or issue; he was usually far ahead of me in his ideas and support. He was a steadying hand and a compassionate heart. He and Marie remind me of our bright and deeply appreciated partnerships over the years I was privileged to serve in that Congregation, as it served Memphis so well, and served the world through the Presbyterian Church USA.
