Dr. Thomas Arthur Currey's Obituary
Dr. Thomas Arthur Currey Sr, MD FACS of Collierville, TN went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 4, 2023. He was born July 9, 1933 in Itawamba County, MS. He is predeceased by his mother, Anna Laura Williams Currey, his father, Charles Edward Currey, and his brother Charles William Currey.
During his 90+ years, Dr. Currey was not only dedicated to God and his family, but to his career as an ophthalmologist. He was inspired to seek a career in medicine by seeing the need in his own community during his growing up years in Amory, MS.
He attended the University of Mississippi for his pre-medical studies and obtained his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Tennessee in 1958. He served his patients and his community for over 5 decades attributing his success to being led by and blessed by God. He enjoyed going to work every day and resisted retiring, practicing ophthalmology until he was 77 years of age. Advice he would offer to aspiring professionals would be to acquire all the education one can, live a good life, and work hard.
During the course of his lifetime, Dr Currey achieved much in his field. Among many other accomplishments, he founded Eye Specialists Association, PC, was President of the Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology, held the offices of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Tennessee Medical Association, and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
In his spare time Dr. Currey enjoyed photography, traveling, good music, and sports. His love for music and sports began at Amory High School where he was a member of the MS Lions Allstate Band as well as football center for the Little Ten Conference.
Everyone who met him, found him to be kind: from his family, friends, patients and colleagues to the doctors, nurses and caregivers who served him during his last months of sickness.
If asked what his greatest personal achievement was, his answer was simply “My Family.” He leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Carol Ann Clabough Currey, his sons, Dr. Thomas Arthur Currey Jr. (Karen) of Germantown, TN and Charles Russell Currey (Dr. Nikki) of Tupelo, MS, a sister-in-law, Dawn Clabough Dabbs of Neosho, MO (Dr. Wil) and a brother-in-law Dr. Charles Clabough (Mary) of Gulf Breeze, FL. He also leaves 6 grandchildren, 7 great- grandchildren and numerous and beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all.
Dr. Currey’s life was recently celebrated during a small family service at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Poplar Avenue in Memphis. He was interred in the mausoleum there. Anyone wishing to send a donation in his memory may send it to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or the charity of their choice.
