Susan Nowell Lange's Obituary
Susan Nowell Lange of Memphis, Tenn. passed away at the age of 70 on Friday, July 25, 2025, at StoryPoint Senior Living Germantown. Susan was born in Memphis on August 18, 1954, and was the oldest of two daughters.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Raymond Leon Nowell and Eva Jane Nowell.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, John, sons Michael and Andrew and daughter Morgan and granddaughters Aeryn and Parker, sister Jane, cousin Yolanda and her best friend for over 60 years, Judy, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Susan enjoyed a robust 45 year professional career. After graduating from Memphis State University (today known as University of Memphis) with a degree in accounting, Susan joined the international accounting firm Ernst and Whinny and earned her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. She then spent several years outside of public accounting including serving as an auditor for Kemmons Wilson, founder of Holiday Inn, and subsequently C & I and Commerce Union Bank as an accounting manager. After her son Andrew was born, she maintained a private practice for several years to allow her flexibility in Andrew’s preschool years. Susan returned to public accounting with several prestigious local CPA firms in Memphis, TN including Bean and Ison CPA’s and Consultants, The Marston Group CPA’s and Advisors, and finished her career at Thompson Dunavant PLC (and its successor CBIZ) where she worked as a senior tax manager for 20 years. Subsequently Susan continued in a consulting capacity with TD Capital Management, LLC.
Susan was involved with the American Institute of Banking where she served with distinction as president. She also served as treasurer of Madonna Circle.
Her colleagues described her as a tireless, trustworthy, dedicated teammate and someone who could always be counted on with any assignment to see it through to the end. She was viewed as a consummate professional and the ultimate team player.
Susan was known for her kind heart and was also driven to helping others either through volunteering or donations and encouraged our family to get involved in any way that helped those in need.
She was tireless in her personal life as well. Totally dedicated to her husband and three children and the friends she loved. She loved her mother and cared for her as primary caregiver for over 18 years in our home until her death in 2019.
She loved to travel and plan our vacations, but you had better be ready for a workout because wherever we went throughout America or in Europe she wanted to see it all. Susan loved music, especially the “storytellers”, like James Taylor and Elton John and often hummed a little tune and dancing a little step to her favorite music through our home.
She was quiet, gentle and the love of our lives. My girl will be missed and loved forever, she cannot be replaced in my life and our hearts. Our faith tells us she is now free of pain and suffering, once again whole and happy. She received her fast pass and was able to go to the head of the line and be welcomed with Christ’s open arms into heaven.
In lieu of flowers, we request you make a donation to one of her favorite causes such as Yosemite National Park, University of Memphis School of Accounting, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Page Robbins Adult Day Center.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38119 (901) 767-8930. “Where Memphis comes to remember, since 1924.”
