Susan and I have been friends for almost 50 years. Started way back at Yokota High School in Japan and continued ever since. Even though we didn't live in the same state, we always would find ways to see each other. In the early days after I left Japan, whenever she would come through LAX (CA), I would drive down to see her at the airport and we would spend time during her layover. (That was the old days!) Susan has always been so kind and thoughtful and caring. When my Dad died, I was suppose to go Kennedy Space Center (FL) for the Space Flight Awareness Award ceremony as a recipient. I wasn't going to go but my mom encouraged me to go and I called up my sweet Susan and she jumped on a plane and met me in Florida and gladly was my guest. We had so much fun, laughed all night and it was a good reminder that memories with our loved ones will always be cherished.
Susan always remembered birthdays, holidays and would just check in to see how the family was doing.
I miss my friend, and all our chats over the years. It warms my heart when I think of our memories we made and the conversations we've had. She is and always will be a true friend.

Susan and I first met when we were next door neighbors in Memphis. I had lived there for almost a year, and had yet to meet this mysterious stranger next door. All I knew about her was she was gone frequently and had many Fedex and UPS packages delivered to her door. The only time I knew she was home was when the packages disappeared. Once, near the holidays, I noticed the same packages were at her door for past few days, so I decided, as a good neighbor, and who was curious to meet this mysterious stranger to take in the packages for safe keeping, and wrote a note to knock on my door anytime to retrieve them. Susan finally knocked on my door, and very politelly demanded her packages. I thought that was the end of it. But Susan, being Susan, later that week invited me to a holiday gathering of her friends in her apartment. It was because of that generosity, I would become a part of Susan's "family". Her friends became my friends, we shared similar interests, we joked, laughed, and became close confidants. In short, a life-long friendship developed based on love, and mutual respect, that transcended even this mortal life. I was blessed to have called Susan, My Friend.
Susan always believed that Angels play a role in our lives. For many years during Christmas season, I would send out to my dear friends and family holiday cards. For Susan, I would add a small angel ornament which I collected during my world travels. I obtained these special handcrafted ornaments with only Susan in mind. She told me she loved getting them each year and had a special small tree to hold all of them. I loved sending them because it made both of us happy. I will miss sending them to her, but I know she is now surrounded by her Angels.
I retired from the Navy when I lived in Memphis. I wanted those who meant a lot to me to be a part of that day. Susan and our circle of friends, Patricia, Kate and Doug, and my mom did me the honor of attending along with my Navy co-workers. A retirement ceremony is a special event, and a celebration of a successful career. I like to joke that my friends attended just because they never seen one, the navy personnel attend for the free food. Either way, my friends made this emotional day special for me.
