Steven Hobson Cook's Obituary
Steven (Steve) Hobson Cook, 74, lost his battle with cancer on August 4th. He was born in Starkville, MS to Robert P. and Elizabeth Hobson Cook on October 22, 1950. The family moved back to Pontotoc, MS where Steve grew up helping his Dad on the family newspaper, The Pontotoc Progress. He attended Pontotoc High School, Mississippi State University and Ole Miss, graduating with a Criminal Justice degree. He joined the Memphis Police Department and moved through the ranks from Patrolman until later retiring as a Lieutenant. During his career with MPD he worked in Organized Crime and on several task forces with ATF, Airport Police, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. After retirement he worked security for First Tennessee Trust Department.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert P. Cook and his brother, Russell Cook. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Hobson Cook, his wife of 49 years, Mary Lynne Cook, two daughters, Alysson Lois Reese (Spencer) and Lauren Elizabeth Cook, four grandchildren and beloved nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.
Steve was known for his welcoming smile, smoking a pipe and drinking copius amounts of black coffee. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, although his version of hunting was usually just a good hike through the woods. He also loved reading and spending time with his family and friends. Steve will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Steve’s name to the West Cancer Foundation, Methodist Hospice House or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Steve’s celebration of life reception will be held from 11-2 on August 30th in the Memorial Park reception room.
