I just learned the sad news of Steve’s death a couple days ago and would like to say a few words to pay my respect to him. I was admitted to the graduate program in the Dept of Anatomy & Neurobiology in 1986. Being the first Ph.D. student from mainland China, Steve took good care of me, showing me around and inviting me to have Christmas dinner with him. During my graduate study, I got to know many excellent scientists and learned from them, which is the result of his vision and leadership. From UT-Memphis, I started my academic career in United States. My accomplishment couldn’t be achieved without Steve’s help and support. Rest in peace, Steve. It is with a heavy heart that I read the message from Bill Armstrong. Steve was an amazing man who could read people so well and get the best out of the people around him. He built an amazing department and recruited such a wonderful group of faculty. Steve gave me the opportunity to flourish and succeed. Rest in Peace Steve

Professor Kitai was a visionary scientist. His pioneering work has advanced our understanding of the basal ganglia, a brain structure controlling our motor function and other behavior. For this, Professor Kitai will be remembered forever.

Very sad to hear about this. Steve Kitai was a world-renowned neuroscientist who built one of the strongest neuroscience departments in the country at University of Tennessee Health Science Center beginning in 1983, before retiring in 2002. He was mentor to many fine young faculty, many of whom went on to become department heads and center directors at UTHSC as well as around the country. He will be missed.
