Stephen Doyle's Obituary
Stephen J. Doyle passed away in his sleep recently at Kirby Pines Retirement Community.Mr. Doyle was born in New Jersey in 1923. After graduation from high school, he entered college in 1940. World War II interrupted his studies, and, volunteering for the Army in 1942, he served as a junior officer in the Field Artillery in France, Belgium and Germany from Fall 1944 until the end of the war in Europe. He was part of the Allied Occupation Forces until 1946, when he was demobilized and returned to civilian life. He met his future wife, Martha Vardaman of Memphis, during the war while stationed at what was then Camp Chaffee in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. When his Army service ended in 1946, he married her and she accompanied him to Philadelphia, where he finished his degree at the University of Pennsylvania using the GI Bill. In 1947 he and his wife moved to Memphis, where he began his long employment with the First National Bank of Memphis. He was with the bank for over 35 years, and saw many changes there,retiring in the 1980’s after the Bank had expanded into what is now the regional First Tennessee Bank.Mr. Doyle was widowed in 2007, and had lived at Kirby Pines for several years. His is survived by his brother, Paul Doyle, of New York, and his son, Stephen Doyle, of Pennsylvania.
