Sonja "Sherry" Hickey's Obituary
Sonja “Sherry” Hickey Ed.D died at Methodist Hospice Sunday March 20th, 2016 on the day of her 40th wedding anniversary. She was born August 21st, 1944 in Little Rock, AR. She was the daughter of Arthur Herman Hunt and Mollie Jewel Hunt. She is survived by her husband Dr. Thomas Hickey and two daughters Sonia Denise Brown and her husband Rick, and Glenna Michele Rodgers and her husband Jason. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Spenser Powell, Sidney Edwards, Devon Jade Hengst, Nolan Brown, Graham Brown, Gabriel Rodgers and two great grand children: Chloe Edwards and Mia Price. She had a number of beloved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two sisters, Dolores Foiles and Kathryn Landers. She was preceded in death by her sisters Glenna Flack and June Foiles. Sherry had a long career in education, starting when she received her BSN and MSN at the University of Arkansas. She earned her Ed.D at Memphis State University. She began her nursing career at the VA Hospital in North Little Rock, AR. where she met her loving husband. After the VA she began teaching at East Arkansas Community College. She later taught Nursing at the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee. The majority of her career was spent teaching Nursing at Union University in Germantown, TN, where she retired as Professor Emeritus. She was deeply loved by hundreds of students. During her retirement she enjoyed volunteer work at the West Cancer Center. Her hobbies included a love of reading and taking care of her menagerie of animals. Funeral services will be held on Good Friday, March 25th at 2:30 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery at 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis TN. Visitation will be held prior to the services at 1:30 pm Friday.
