Solomon White, Jr.'s Obituary
Lawrence (Laurie) Barton Walthal, 81, died Friday, May 21, 2010. She was a lifelong and proud Memphian. She and her late husband Ed were devoted members of Independent Presbyterian Church (IPC) and lead Christ centered lives with a heart for many charities. She was completely selfless with her family, church and friends. She believed with all her heart and soul that living life to the fullest meant giving of herself. She often spent her time, energy and finances with IPC, Salvation Army and many other charitable endeavors. Laurie was a longtime member of Memphis Country Club (MCC), Junior League, Salvation Army Auxilliary, Tuesday Study Club, Sewing Circle, Soup Group and “The Growing Up Girls”. One of Laurie’s loves was IPC which involved her Tuesday Bible Study, Friendship Sunday School Class, serving Wednesday night suppers, setting up Communion and her many friendships which have been a blessing to all who knew her and her positive attitude.Laurie was involved in the golf community and served as president at MCC and MAWGA (Memphis Area Women’s Golf Association) in 1987. Laurie and Ed enjoyed playing golf together and with their many friends through the “Saturday Morning Dogs”. Laurie attended Hutchison and graduated from Lausanne. She went on to graduate from Bennet College in New Jersey. Laurie was preceded in death by her parents Franklin Gustavous Barton Jr., and Pamela Coe Barton, brother Franklin Gustavous Barton III and devoted and adoring husband Edward Washington Walthal Jr. She leaves two sons, Rev. Rob (Kathy) Dewey, of Charleston, S.C. and Edward W.”Ward” (Jennifer) Walthal, III of Memphis; two daughters, Lawrence Walthal (Thomas) Holmes of Fort Hood, TX, and Beth Walthal (Tim) Harrelson of Germantown, six grandchildren and brother James “Jim” (Carol) Hardin Barton and sister-in-law Jane Barton. The funeral Service will be Monday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at Independent Presbyterian Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. prior to services.
