Sidney Shapiro's Obituary
Sidney Frederick Shapiro, 87, beloved father and grandfather, died Monday, June 1, 2009 at Baptist Hospital after a long and full life. A retired businessman and community volunteer, Mr. Shapiro was born February 19, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pa. He began studies at what is now the University of Memphis, but left to join the military during WW II. He was a First Lieutenant with the 20th Air Force, as pilot and aircraft commander of a B-29, “Superfortress”, flying combat missions in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to Memphis and with his father, Harry L. Shapiro founded Shapiro Southern Uniforms. In the early 1970’s he retired and resumed his interest in flying. Mr. Shapiro volunteered his time to fly patients to the Shriner’s burn centers around the country. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois and survived by his son, Freddy Shapiro (Stephanie), daughter, Lynne Kissell (Tom), grandsons, Brandon and Zack Shapiro, Zach, Rick and Paul Kissell and his favorite granddaughter, Samantha Shapiro. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 3rd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at Memorial Park Funeral Home, followed by a private family service. The family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society, Shrine’s Burn Hospitals or the Alzheimer’s Association.
