Shirley Burdick Springfield's Obituary
Shirley Burdick Springfield, age 90, passed away peacefully at Allen Morgan Health Center on Wednesday, January 27, 2021. She was born in Memphis, TN and is predeceased by her parents Austin William Burdick and Mamie G. Burdick, her sisters Joyce Green, Katherine Mobley and Martha Burdick and her brother Austin Burdick.
She is survived by her three children, Sidney Evans (Dan), Susan Springfield and Jim Springfield (Shawn); four grandchildren Scott Evans, Katie Evans, Jake Springfield and Drew Springfield; her sister, Anne Hadaway; three nieces, Jeanne Nixon, Betty Edwards, Mary Jane Love and one nephew, Joe Green. She also leaves her ex-husband and father of their children, James F. Springfield; although they divorced many years ago, they became friends again in recent years.
The family appreciates the great care given Shirley at Allen Morgan Health Center and specifically acknowledges the special care and concern from Chantel Hogan, LPN and Dee Wright, LPN.
Shirley graduated from Germantown High School and attended Southwestern (now Rhodes College) and Memphis State University (now University of Memphis). As a young adult, she taught school at South Park Elementary in Memphis and at a school in New Orleans. Later in life, she worked at Goldsmith’s and Woolf Brothers department stores in Memphis. Most of her life she spent as a homemaker. She loved her children and grandchildren fiercely and never shied away from voicing her opinion – even while maintaining a lovely smile and quiet southern drawl.
Due to COVID, there will not be any memorial services for her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Family Safety Center in Memphis, the American Heart Association Mid-South Go Red for Women Fund, the University of Memphis Foundation - Springfield First Generation Scholarship, the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Foundation or the charitable organization of your choice.
