Shirley Harper's Obituary
Shirley M. Harper, 96, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven, Mississippi having recently moved from Memphis, Tennessee. She was born December 17, 1913 in Berrien Springs, Michigan, daughter of J. Turner and Goldie Colvin Smith who preceded her in death, along with a sister, Lois Mae McAfee and a brother, Lt. Colvin T. Smith, who was killed in action during WWII. A lifelong member of McLemore Avenue Christian church now named Faith Christian Church Shirley dedicated much of her life to Christian education and was recognized by the denomination for the success of the Children’s Department at McLemore Avenue Church. Her professional career began in 1931 shortly after graduation from South Side High School when she was employed as a secretary-bookkeeper for Cooper Office Equipment Company. The ensuing years brought many diverse opportunities including being the first woman hired by the Weather Bureau in Memphis. She attained her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Memphis State University. In April 1983 Shirley “left the working class” having achieved the title of Vice-president at Home Federal Savings and Loan Association. She leaves two daughters, Patricia H. Pitts of Memphis and Sandra Harper of Southaven along with nieces and nephews and their children and numerous friends. Visitation will be held from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 19 at Faith Christian Church with a memorial service to follow at 2:30 p.m. Memorials: Faith Christian Church 4965 Willow Road, Memphis, TN 38117
