Sachritz, Sheryl's Obituary
Sheryl Sachritz, 77 of Memphis, TN, passed away on November 1, 2024, after a year long battle against cancer and complications from surgery.
A memorial service was held November 8 at Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) with inurnment at Memorial Park (Memphis) on November 14.
Sherry was an active member of the Memphis choir scene, having started at Temple Israel and Second Presbyterian Church, and ultimately at Calvary Episcopal, Grace-St. Luke’s, and Church of the Good Shepherd. She started her love of music as a drummer in the Snowden Junior High band. When school required taking either Art, Music Appreciation/Chorus, or Band, she said, “I can’t draw a straight line and I can’t read music. But I can make noise.” Under the tutelage of Gloria Dick, she learned – to the point of earning an Honorable Mention at regional Metropolitan Opera auditions.
Since music alone wouldn’t pay the bills, she ended up following her mother into social work, helping support dialysis patients and their caregivers. But her heart for others didn’t stop when she left work. And didn’t stop with humans. To which her dog and cat family members could attest.
A wise man once said, “As a man sows, so shall he reap.” And, “From the abundance of the heart, a man speaks.” Or sings. And all the years of singing in church ultimately reaped a saving love of the Lord.
Sherry was predeceased by her parents Irvin and Dorothy (Wolson) Sachritz, and her partner of 35 years, Jana Putnam. She leaves a brother, Nathan (and Ann) Sachritz of Portage, Michigan, nieces Rachel Sachritz of South Bend, Indiana, Lindsay (and Matt) DeYoung also of Portage, and great nephew Elijah DeYoung.
