Shed Hill Caffey, Jr.'s Obituary
Dr. Shed Hill Caffey, Jr., 83, died May, 9, 2009. He was born March 31, 1926 in Oxford, Mississippi, the son of Reverend Shed Hill Caffey, a Methodist minister, and Mary Moore Caffey.The family moved to a new parish in northern Mississippi every four years, and Dr. Caffey graduated from high school in Clarksdale. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Mississippi and his medical degree at Emory University. In 1952, he married the former Jane Reed of Tupelo, and they settled in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where he was in general practice. In 1958, Dr. Caffey moved to Memphis and began a pediatric residency that culminated in a year-long fellowship at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. In 1961, he and his family returned to Memphis and he entered private practice, retiring in 1991. Dr. Caffey was an avid tennis player who maintained a weekly singles match until his mid-70’s and he sang tenor for many years in the choir at Christ United Methodist Church. A lifelong Anglophile, he was an active member and past president of the Memphis chapter of the English-Speaking Union. Dr. Caffey was a passionate believer in the mission of the Baddour Center in Senatobia, where she served on the board. His efforts were recognized with the dedication of the Shed and Jane Caffey Clinic at the Baddour Center in 1993.In addition to his wife, Dr. Caffey is survived by his children, Kip (Jan) Caffey of Atlanta, Betsy Caffey of Nashville, and David (Margaret) Caffey of Memphis; his sister, Ruth Still of Birmingham and five grandchildren.A brief service will be held Tuesday, May 12 at 10 a.m. at the mausoleum at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 4488 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN 38117 or the Baddour Center, P.O.
