Sarantos Hatzigeorgiou's Obituary
Sarantos ‘Eddie’ Stelianos Hatzigeorgiou, 66, of Memphis, TN passed away on December 27, 2018. Sarantos was born in Athens, Greece on February 20, 1952, as the oldest son of Stelianos and Sophia Hatzigeorgiou. He earned a commerce engineering degree and graduated as a mechanical engineer from The Greek Naval Academy Pythagoras in 1972 while he was moonlighting as a taxi driver. Sarantos immigrated to the United States after serving with honors in the Greek Military in 1975. He was serving in the military during the Cyprus War. He perfected his soccer skills as a young boy while playing in the streets of Athens. That youthful passion continued into his young adult years where he played soccer professionally for Greece. Upon coming to Memphis, he brought his love and enthusiasm for soccer, which was instrumental in forming one of the first soccer leagues in Memphis in which also forged many meaningful friendships. He met Catherine Mazas in 1977, which began a 40-year adventure. Catherine was in the process of moving to Greece for a teaching position, however fate intervened, and a year later they married in Memphis, TN and had two daughters. In 1982, Sarantos and his younger brother Christos started a repair and auto sales business called C-S Motors starting on East Parkway and later moving to 2508 Summer Avenue where the business continues to thrive today. In addition to his love of soccer, cars, and traveling, what he loved most was his family and friends. Sarantos would consistently go above and beyond for those close to him, even if he wasn’t asked to do so. Sarantos is preceded in death by his parents, Stelios and Sophia Hatzigeorgiou. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Catherine, two daughters, Sophia Bezas (Thomas) of Washington, DC, Diana Donato (Dennis) of Memphis, TN, his loving brother and business partner, Christos Hatzigeorgiou (Marilyn) of Memphis, TN. He also survived by his four grandchildren; Constantine, Sarantos, Joachim, and Penelope. Visitation will be at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 573 North Highland Street in Memphis, Sunday, December 30 from 5-7pm. The funeral services will be Monday, December 31 starting at 11 AM at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family greatly appreciates everyone’s love and support during this time. Kalo Taxidi kai Kalo Paradeiso!
