Sarah "Sally" Conley's Obituary
Sarah Hausle Conley was born in Buffalo, New York on October 10th, 1921. Daughter of Jerome and Cecile Hausle, Sally was the middle child of nine in the Hausle household. She attended St. Rose of Lima grade school and Holy Angels Academy secondary school. Although her father offered her a new car to stay closer to home after high school, Sally decided to leave Buffalo to study Journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1939. Sally always had her own mind, and was definitely more interested in letters than fenders. She graduated in 1943, and moved to Kansas City, where she met her future spouse, Willard John Conley of Watertown, South Dakota. They married in San Francisco on February 22, 1944 and their first child, Michael Dean was born in San Francisco in 1945. After the end of the war, they returned to Kansas City, where Louise (1946), Mary Ellen (1948), John Joseph (1951) and William Benjamin (1961) joined the family. A good cook with a taste for the New York Times crossword puzzle, she always provided both physical and intellectual sustenance. With her focus on independence and education, Sally’s brood was always on the move after high school in universities throughout the US. At the same time, she supported her husband in his business by providing advertising copy and organizational skills. As soon as her youngest was out of the nest, she and her husband Bill spent more of each year at retirement community in Tucson, AZ. After Bill died in 1994, Sally dedicated much of her time to charitable activities including MADD (Mothers against Drunk Drivers) and the Salvation Army. Due to failing health, Sally moved to Memphis, TN in 2006, where she spent the last five years. Although she was not active, she lived a comfortable life, and received loving care from Jannie and Mea. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Conley of Memphis, her two sons, John Conley of Chicago and William Benjamin Conley of Dusseldorf, Germany, her daughters-in-law, Mary Jang, Jackie and Anja Conley, six Conley grandchildren, Melanie (1982), Caroline (1984), Gillian (1993), Jack (1994), Jeffrey (1997) and Charlie (2000) and her sister, Ruth Ribaud. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Conley, her son, Michael Conley, her daughter, Louise Conley, three sisters and four brothers.
