Sandra Canterbury Shaffer's Obituary
Sandra Canterbury Shaffer, 87, of the Memphis, TN area, passed away on September 1, 2023, in her daughter, Leslie’s home. She was surrounded by her daughters Lisa and Leslie as she passed on through the heavenly gates.
Sandra was born on August 10, 1936, in Memphis, TN to William Tullos Canterbury and Mary McNair Canterbury.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Mitch) Shaffer, Leslie (Jon) Tandy, 4 grandchildren, Ashton and Jacob Tandy, Kriston Wilson, Whitney Daniel, 4 great-grandchildren, Ellison and Garrett Wilson, Walker and Brenley Daniel, sister, Peggy (Audrey) Osborn, and brother William Canterbury.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, William Tullos Canterbury and Mary McNair Canterbury, sister Beverly Blumbeks, and husband, Donnell Shaffer.
Sandra worked from 1955 – 1959 at the Federal Reserve Bank in Downtown Memphis, TN where she met her husband, Don. They married, and had their first daughter, Lisa, in 1959, then Leslie, in 1965. In April of 1967, Sandra and Don opened their own Donut Shop, Shaffer’s Honey Fluff Donuts, and maintained the business for 18 years. In 1986, Sandra opened a nail salon named The Pamper Parlour and sold it a year or so later.
Sandra loved her children and guided them through life with Christianity, love and continuous support. She was also very involved in the development of her class reunions, modeled for the garden club association and supported the elderly among her family and friends. Her grandchildren were ever so important to her, as she frequently had them over to visit, go for ice cream and to their favorite Dollar Tree for an afternoon surprise. Her daughters had several pets where she became their “Mammaw” including Boozer, Cody Bear, Newman, Rocco, Poppy, Belli, Willow, Bear, Shelton and Piper. They all knew that when they were at her house, they would get a piece of cheese or a special treat. Willow laid by her side until her death, and “I Love Poppy” were her last words.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. all in the Fireside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital.
