Sandra was born on April 3, 1937, in Blytheville, Arkansas. She later moved with her family to Nashville and eventually to Memphis. She graduated from Messick High School and went on to earn her degree in Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. It was there that she met Jim, the love of her life and her devoted partner for nearly six decades.
Sandra dedicated more than 30 years to teaching, primarily at the first-grade level. Known for being both firm and fun, she made a lasting impact on countless young students. She taught most recently at Stafford Elementary and Oakhaven Elementary in Memphis, where her commitment to education and nurturing young minds was evident to all who knew her.
An active and devoted mother, Sandra was deeply involved in her children’s lives. She served as a Cub Scout den mother, Brownie leader, Girl Scout leader, and regional Girl Scout cookie chair. She could always be found cheering on Brent at his sporting events and attending the games where Candi performed as a cheerleader.
Sandra had a lifelong love of animals, especially the many cats she cared for over the years, as well as her cherished grand-dogs. She inherited her father’s green thumb, which was beautifully reflected in her imaginative and well-tended yard. Sandra was also active in her community, volunteering with Stage Set, a volunteer group that supports Theatre Memphis, participating in United Methodist Women, and working for many years in the library at Christ Church.
An avid reader, Sandra enjoyed novels as well as reading the newspaper cover to cover each day. She was a loyal fan of University of Memphis Tigers basketball and University of Alabama football.
