Sallie Patterson Harris' Obituary
Sallie Patterson Harris of Memphis, Tennessee was a loving spouse, devoted mother, early-childhood educator, and loyal friend. Surrounded by her family, she passed away on June 17, 2026, at the age of 73.
Sallie was the daughter of Dr. Russell Horner Patterson Jr. and Rebecca McRee Patterson. A native Memphian, she graduated from Central High School and the University of Tennessee at Martin with a bachelor's degree in Childhood Education.
Sallie began her teaching career at St. Louis Catholic School in Memphis, where she taught for 12 years before dedicating several years to raising her children. She later joined St. Mary’s Episcopal School, where she spent the next 23 years teaching in the Early Childhood program. St. Mary’s was one of the great loves of Sallie’s life. She cherished her colleagues, her students, and the school community. She found joy in her work there, impacting the lives of countless girls who remember her simply as ‘Miss Harris.’ Sallie’s career at St. Mary’s culminated with her serving as Head of Early Childhood in 2020 and receiving the Gold Cross, the school’s most prestigious honor.
She was a faithful member of Christ Methodist Church, singing in the chancel choir and always eager to worship (or party!) with her friends in the Crossroads Sunday School class. Sallie also devoted many years to the church’s special needs ministry, where she shared the same warmth, energy, and welcoming spirit that drew people to her throughout her life.
Friendship was an important part of Sallie’s life. She maintained lifelong friendships and welcomed new people with ease. From annual beach trips to international adventures with dear friends, she cherished the memories they made together.
Nothing brought Sallie more joy than her family. She never missed an opportunity to talk about her children, Rebecca and William, and delighted in celebrating their accomplishments, big and small. She had a gift for caring deeply about the things her family cared about, making their interests and passions her own. No matter how busy or tired she was, she made time for her people. Whether through a home-cooked meal, a phone call, or her unwavering support, Sallie made her family feel deeply loved.
For more than 41 years, Sallie shared her life with her husband, David. Together they built a family grounded in faith, laughter, and love. Whether planning their next trip, a gathering with friends, or simply spending time together, Sallie and David embraced a life overflowing with friendship, community, and fun. Through life’s joys and its greatest challenges, they remained devoted partners, embodying the promise of ‘in sickness and in health.’
Sallie was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Russell Horner Patterson Jr. and Rebecca McRee Patterson, and by her brother, Dr. Russell Horner Patterson III. Sallie is survived by her husband, David Jeffrey Harris; their two children, Rebecca Harris Checkler of New York City (Joe) and William David Harris of Memphis; her sister, Carolyn Patterson Bradshaw; and her brother, William McRee Patterson.
A Celebration of Sallie will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 11:30 a.m. in the sanctuary at Christ Methodist Church at 4488 Poplar Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. The service will be followed by a reception in Seabrook Hall at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift in Sallie’s honor. The family requests that contributions be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal School or JoyLife901, the special needs ministry at Christ Methodist Church.
