Ruth Petty's Obituary
Ruth M. Petty, 92, passed away on March 1, 2017 at Baptist East Hospital after a lengthy illness. She is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Charles H. Petty, parents, Grace M. Carkuff and Joshua N. Martin, stepfather, Maurice Carcuff and sister, Norrine Adams. She is survived by a son, Charles M. Petty of Memphis, a daughter Elizabeth Cagle (Steve) of Dickson, TX., sister, Mildred Wilson of Osceola, AR, two grandchildren, Ashley Garcia (Anthony) of Channelview, TX and Amber Cristina Trevino (Joey) of Dickson, TX., four great-grandchildren, Clhoe Garcia, John Garcia, Selina Trevino and Josh Trevino. Born Ruth Martin on December 19, 1924 in Memphis she graduated from Beaumont High School in St Louis, MO. She worked as a secretary for Texas Gas, Campbells Clinic, Central Cumberland Presbyterian Church and WMC TV. She was a founding member of Colonial Cumberland Church in Memphis before her husbands ordination into the ministry. She served as a “preachers wife” at churches in Trenton, TN, Chattanooga, TN, Columbus, MS, Longview, TX, Paducah, KY and Kenton, TN. She often served as a church secretary. In her later years she enjoyed visiting the casinos in Tunica, Laughlin, NV and Las Vegas, NV. She also enjoyed attending Memphis Redbirds games. She enjoyed visiting her friends at the Quince Rd Barber and Style Shop where she was nicknamed “Trouble”. The family wishes to thank all those who cared for Ruth including her longtime physician Dr. Dana Wright. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 7 from 1:30-2:30PM with the service to immediately follow at 2:30PM. All services will be held at Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers send a memorial to the charity of your choice.
