Ruth Hoyt Montague's Obituary
Ruth Hoyt Montague, daughter of John G. Hoyt, Jr. and Mary Louise Herschede, passed away on March 23, 2022 at Harbor Chase of Germantown with her family nearby. She was 87.
Ruth was born January 22, 1935 in Kansas City, KS. She spent most of her childhood in Cincinnati, OH and attended the University of Cincinnati. Following college, Ruth moved to Memphis and began working at Buckeye Cellulose Corporation where she met her future husband, Charles A. Montague, Jr., with whom she was married for 63 years.
A faithful member of Christ Methodist Church, Ruth also participated in the LeBonheur Club of Memphis and served many summers in the Service Over Self (SOS) kitchen.
Beginning in 1978, she enjoyed many pleasant years working at Brown-Wright Jewelers. In 1988, along with her friend Peggy Harwell, Ruth opened RSVP Stationers in Chickasaw Oaks Plaza to serve the Memphis area with fine stationery and invitations. Later, RSVP moved to the Regalia Center in East Memphis. Ruth enjoyed sharing in the lives and events of her customers until the sale of the business in 2003.
Following their retirement, Charlie and Ruth (“his bride”) enjoyed time at Perdido Key, FL, particularly with their growing family of grandchildren.
“Gamma” was a gracious, kind, loving and prayerful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was deeply loved by and who positively influenced all who knew her - particularly her family.
She leaves behind her three children: Robert (Kay) Montague; Carol (Jack) Stokes; and, David (Kelli) Montague; her ten (10) grandchildren (Ross Montague; Laura Montague Haltom; Cameron Stokes Knight; John Stokes; Will Stokes; May Montague Clinkscales; Annie Montague; Ruthie Montague; Mary Van Montague; and, Joy Montague); and thirteen (13) great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother (Jay) and sister (Judy) and leaves behind a half-sister (Suzy Hoyt Snell) and half-brother (James K. Hoyt).
A visitation will be held Monday, March 28 from 10:30-11:00am in the Christ Methodist Church Parlor. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am in Wilson Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Christ Methodist Church.
