“This is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that was ever gathered together at the White House with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone”John Kennedy, at a dinner honoring Nobel Prize winners of the Western Hemisphere, 1963Because I don’t have anything close to Russell’s amazing store of knowledge (no one does) I had to look this up to be sure I got it right. This quote always reminds me of Russell, and what an honor and pleasure it was to know him. His wife, Joan, was a dear friend of mine as an undergraduate and I met him through her. It didn’t matter that I knew nothing about his specialty or medicine beyond that of a lay person, as everyone else noted, he could talk to anyone about anything and would know more about it than anyone else, although he was tactful about it.The last couple years Russell and Joan held a mini-reunion at their home in New Hampshire for Joan’s college friends and spouses. Russell was such a gracious host, but he was also our Google. He had absolutely no short term memory loss, despite how much was crammed in there, and during that dreaded pause when one of us frantically searched for something we knew we knew, he always, always supplied the missing word. The world has lost the most extraordinary person I ever knew, and my heart and best thoughts go out to Joan and her family.Jane Krebs
