Roy King's Obituary
ROY L. KING, of Collierville, a retired teacher and administrator for Memphis City Schools, passed away at his home on Saturday morning, September 11, 2010. He was 83 years old. This great educator will be sorely missed by the thousand of pupils he guided in History, American Government, and “The Three Rs”. He served in the Korean Conflict achieving a rank of Staff Sergeant, and received his BA in History from Union University in Jackson, TN. His teaching career began at Whiteville High and Grand Junction High. He completed a Master’s of Education at University of Memphis, and then moved to Memphis and continued his career mainly as principal at Treadwell, Pine Hill and Charjean. He also taught night classes for three decades at State Technical Institute, and later he taught in retirement at Auburndale in Shelby County and Tipton Rosemark Academy. He was an avid gardener and military historian, and a member of Covenant Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, September 15. A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 16 at 11 a.m. all at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Shirley King; daughter, Renee Bora and her husband, Brian of Mission Viejo, CA; three sons, Rodney King and his wife, Mary of Collierville, TN, Mark King and his wife, Sandra and Lee King, all of Irvine, CA; seven grandchildren, Amy, Lisa, Stacy, Steven, Kimberly, Sam and Hallie; five great-grand-children, Eliza, Addie, Preston, Brooks and Aisling.
