Roy Barnes' Obituary
Dr. Roy James Barnes, 76, passed away on Jan. 30 at his home in Point Clear, Alabama. A Memphis native, Roy was a high school graduate of Christian Brothers College, attended Memphis State University, and in 1962 obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee College Of Medicine. Roy began his 50 year career in medicine as a general practice physician in Senatobia and Cleveland, Mississippi, then chose to specialize in psychiatry and completed his psychiatric residency at Cherokee State Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa in 1967. He practiced psychiatry in Memphis and later in Point Clear, Alabama where he relocated in 1984. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Always intrigued by flying, Roy earned his pilot’s license and later served in the Air Force Reserve as a flight surgeon. Roy was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Lucille (Dougherty) Barnes of Memphis and his brother Thomas G. Barnes of Memphis. He leaves his wife Judith Rankin Barnes; his sisters Barbara George of Tullahoma, TN, Marjorie Rossie Turk of Ridgeland MS, and Shirley Harrington of Horn Lake MS; four children, Dr. Lyle Barnes Montgomery of Gautier MS, Margaret Elise Barnes of Mobile, AL, Roy James Barnes Jr. and John Anthony Barnes both of Memphis; three stepchildren, Nelle Harris Van Brocklin and Andrew Patterson Harris both of Memphis, and Jennifer Harris Hester of Gilbert AZ; six grandchildren, Michael Montgomery, Kathryn Montgomery, Katherine Caywood, Sarah Hester, Sam Barnes and Lily Van Brocklin; and two great grandchildren, Sadie and Grace Montgomery. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, February 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Memphis with reception to follow at the church. A memorial services in Point Clear, AL will follow at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Waterfront Rescue Mission/ Mobile Rescue Mission P.O.
