Dr. Roger L. Hiatt's Obituary
Roger Lew Hiatt, M.D., 89 years old, of 9293 Poplar Avenue in Germantown, TN, passed away at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, TN on Friday morning, October 26, 2018. Dr. Hiatt was born in Surry County North Carolina on March 8, 1929, tenth child of William Henry and Gracie Shelton Hiatt. Roger was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in numerous leadership capacities including Stake President, Patriarch, and most recently member of the Memphis Tennessee Temple Presidency. He and his wife, Nancy, presided over the Philippines Baguio Mission from 1994 to 1997. Dr. Hiatt graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1951, then served honorably in the U.S. Navy. He subsequently graduated from Brigham Young University in 1954 and as valedictorian of his medical school class at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in 1958. He later completed Ophthalmology residency in Richmond, VA and pediatric fellowship in Washington, D.C. before returning to UT, Memphis as a faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology, where he went on to serve as Department Chair for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Nancy Beamer Hiatt, and is survived by two daughters, Annita Hiatt Watson (David) of Brentwood, TN and Miriam Hiatt Fearnley (Michael) of Germantown; one son, Roger Lew Hiatt, Jr., M.D. (Cary) of Draper, UT; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Mr. Johnny Donald Hiatt (Mary) of Winston-Salem, NC. Viewing will be held for the public on Friday, November 2, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at the Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 5668 Poplar Avenue in Memphis, TN. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 3, at 3:00pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 8150 Walnut Grove Road in Cordova, TN. Funeral service will be presided over by President Gary Bronson and conducted by Bishop Reid Schellhous. Burial will be at the Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Families are Forever.
