Robert Knox Thompson Jr.'s Obituary
Robert Knox Thompson, Jr. passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024 at the age of 95 after a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents Faye and Robert Knox Thompson Sr., and Lula Belle Gordon Thompson, his wife of 57 years. He is survived by his daughter Kay Thompson Gurley (Gary), his son Dr. Robert Knox Thompson III (Roxanne), granddaughters Jessica Gurley Skaggs (Sammy) and Alexandra Thompson, grandson Adam Gurley, great-grandchildren Jacob McDaniel, Kayla Gurley and Aiden Gurley. He was a lifelong Memphian, and as a teen became an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Memphis Tech High School, then attended Memphis State University where he lettered in varsity football, and where he met his future wife Lula Belle Gordon. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War. After returning to Memphis, he began a lifelong career as a salesman and manufacturers rep. In his free time, he enjoyed camping with Boy Scout Troop 75, attending MSU Tigers football games, playing golf, dancing and traveling. He will be interred alongside his wife Lula Belle at Memorial Park cemetery after a private family service. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Betty Childers and the membership of The New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Nesbit, Mississippi for the kindness and fellowship they provided Knox over the last decade of his life.
