Robert L. Morris' Obituary
Lt. Col. Robert L. Morris, USAF (Ret.)Robert L. Morris, 91, of Olive Branch, MS, formerly of Bartlett, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, February 15th. He was born in Florida, orphaned at an early age, and lived in Georgia and Texas before joining the military in his late teens. He started his career in the Georgia National Guard subsequently becoming an aircraft mechanic. During WWII he started as a staff sergeant pilot where he ultimately flew 23 missions over Japan as the commander of the “City of Cincinnati” B-29 aircraft. He was recalled during the Korean War as an instructor pilot. Before retiring, he was the installation officer for the first 149 minuteman missiles at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. After his distinguished Air Force career, he and his family moved to Memphis. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Virginia, and is survived by his son, Robert L. Morris, II, and his wife, Paula, of Bartlett. He leaves behind two grandchildren, Robert L. Morris, III (Misti) of Memphis, and Aly (Tony) Vahle of Huntsville, AL. He will sadly be missed by his three great-grandchildren, Emma Kate and Oliver Morris of Memphis, and Taylor Vahle of Huntsville. Services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 19 at 2:30 with visitation beginning at 1:30. In lieu of flowers, family members request that any donations be sent to the charity of the donors’ choice, Palmer Home for Children of Columbus, MS, or to DeafConnect of the Midsouth.
