Robert Momberg's Obituary
Bob Momberg died peacefully on Thursday morning, February 5, at his home in the Kirby Pines retirement community, surrounded by his family. Born on September 5, 1922, in Cheviot, Ohio, he graduated from Western Hills High School in 1940 and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps three years later. Bob served with the 489th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, receiving three Bronze stars, his plane having been shot down over Sweden, where he became a POW until his release and discharge in 1945.In 1946 Bob married his blind date and lifelong sweetheart Elizabeth Katherine “Betty” Reed, who died in 2010. Their marriage was most amazingly graced with five children – Tom, Nemmie, Mary, Ruth, and David – fourteen grandchildren, and a multitude of great-grandchildren and extended family, all of whom survive him.A retiree of Dover Corporation, Bob was transferred to Memphis by Shepard-Warner Elevator Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1963. Bob was a faithful member of Church of the Holy Communion (Episcopal), where he sang in the choir for 25 years and was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. He was also a Master Mason.A man who put his faith and his family first, Bob also loved watching baseball, making model airplanes and singing along to old favorites from the Big Band era. He was unafraid to serenade his wife, doing so at the last Thanksgiving dinner they shared.Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery on Sunday, February 8, from 5 – 7 pm. On Monday, February 9, a reception in Cheney Parish Hall at Church of the Holy Communion, 4645 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, begins at 10:30 am. A celebration of Bob’s life, including Holy Eucharist, will be offered at the church at Noon. Interment will be at Memorial Park immediately following the church service.Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Behind the Stone Wall.”
