Robert S. McDonald's Obituary
Robert (Bob) Stanley McDonald, age 87, of Germantown passed away at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt on June 2, 2012 due to complications of Alzheimer’s. Bob was born in Birmingham, AL on August 6, 1924 and raised in Montgomery, where his softball pitching talents earned him the nickname Fireball McDonald. He joined the Army at age 18 and served in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant and enrolled in Huntingdon College where he received a degree in business administration. Upon graduation, he began a career with US Steel that spanned 35 years, during which he served in Ft. Smith, Tulsa, Jackson (MS), Birmingham, and Memphis. He retired in 1985 as Regional Sales Manager in the Birmingham office. After retirement, Bob and his wife, Jean, became residents of Germantown, TN where he worked for the Germantown Chamber of Commerce. Bob was known to be the consummate Southern gentleman in all his professional and personal associations. Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 62 years, Jean; daughter Ramona McDonald Speicher, son-in-law John and grandson Robert of Virginia; and granddaughter Rachel and grandson-in-law Michael Providence of New York. Bob’s ready smile and cheerful willingness to participate in any activity will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends and neighbors. The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the staff of Page Robbins Adult Day Care Center in Collierville and the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt for their tender and loving care of Bob over the last several years of his life.
