Robert “Bob” Carter After over 91 years on this earth, Robert “Bob” Carter went to his Heavenly home on December 2, 2018. He was born in a town called Hollywood (Memphis) TNPop, as he was affectionately called by grands, great grands and great-great grands, was preceded in death by his parents, George Dewey Carter and Evie Elizabeth Lee Carter, and his wife, Mildred Louise Vaughn Carter after a wonderful 63-year marriage. He was also preceded by his sisters, Ruth Carter, Mary Evelyn Carter Tidwell, and brothers Howard Carter, Jim Carter and Ralph Carter.He was a 1945 graduate of South Side High School and served in the 2154 Army Service Unit, Military Police. He was stationed at Camp Lee, VA, where he received the World War II Victory Medal, M-1 Rifle Expert and Provost MP Company 2154ASU Awards.Bob always knew the value of work. His Dad put him to work early polishing shoes in his Barber Shop. At age 10, he was delivering groceries on the back of a bicycle. He got so good at riding his bicycle, he was able to ride backward on the handlebars and pedal backwards. He would delight his grandchildren with this feat! And he was a decent roller skater to boot!By age 16, he went to work at the U.S. Post Office where he met his best friend, Bill Davis, and the two remained best friends until his passing.He retired after 30 years with Memphis Light, Gas and Water.He was an active member of Cherokee Baptist Church for 53 years where he served as deacon and trustee. He was most recently a member of Kirby Woods Baptist Church where he served as usher and greeter.He was also an active Gideon.Bob Carter gave meaning to having servant’s heart; serving as Juvenile Court Probation Officer for 36 years gave him the opportunity to impact many young lives. He also volunteered at St Francis Hospital for 33 years, where he never met a stranger and helped calm many anxious patients coming in for outpatient surgery.In 2012, he was recognized the winner of the prestigious Jefferson Service Award for outstanding public service. He often said how he loved to serve and help other people.He leaves behind two Daughters; Beverly Carter Taylor (Joe), Patty Carter Brister (Ed), and a son, Robert (Bobby) Carter (Karen). He also leaves six grandchildren, five Great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.Services will be held Thursday, December 6, 2018, at 1:00 PM with visitation preceding at 12 Noon at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorials will be appreciated to Gideon Central Camp, Gideon’s International, P. O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214, and to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
