Dr. Robert Bourland's Obituary
DR. ROBERT LEON BOURLAND, JR., 68, died August 11, 2010 following a brief illness. A devoted and caring son, husband, father, grandfather and respected physician, Dr. Bourland was a lifelong Memphian. He graduated from Central High School, The University of Memphis and The University of Tennessee College of Health Sciences. Following medical school, he served in the United States Air Force and returning to Memphis, Dr. Bourland completed his residency in Orthopaedics at the Dr. Willis C. Campbell Clinic. He practiced with Memphis Orthopaedic Associates and the East Memphis Orthopaedic Group. He was a pioneer in the field of arthroscopic surgery in the 1970’s. He was in active practice with the profession to which he was so committed until his death. Dr. Bourland was a huge fan and faithful follower of The University of Memphis Tigers, a member of the Highland Hundred, a member of the National Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of Central Church. An avid photographer, he enthusiastically chronicled his family holidays and activities from football, to cheerleading, volleyball and basketball in countless photographs over the years. Dr. Bourland is survived by his loving wife, Jeanine, and their daughter, Brittany Bourland. He is also survived by his daughter, Beverly Bourland Wade, and husband, Randy, his sons, David L. Bourland and wife, Sarah, Richard E. Bourland and wife, Rolana, their mother, Margaret Ferguson Bourland, and five grandchildren, Brennan, Elleson and Parker Wade, and Ramey and Hugh Bourland, as well as his mother, Rosa L Bourland, and brothers, William L. Bourland, Donald E. Bourland and David W. Bourland, and their families. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. R. Leon Bourland, Sr. He will be greatly missed by his family and legions of friends. Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The funeral will be Saturday at Central Church at 2:30 p.m. with visitation from 5-8 p.m. Friday, August 13 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
