R.Lee Winchester's Obituary
R. Lee Winchester, 85, of Germantown, Attorney and Partner of Winchester Law Firm, passed away October 24, 2009. A Veteran of the US Army, served in the Southwest Pacific Theatre; discharged with the rank of Captain. Mr. Winchester was a graduate of the University of Tennessee: LLB, 1949; JD, 1965. He was past President of the Junior Section of both the Memphis and Shelby County and Tennessee Bar Association. He was a City Attorney for Shelby County from 1961-1964; Germantown, TN 1966-1981 and from January 1983-1987; City Attorney for Arlington, TN 1969-1988; Charter Fellow, Tennessee Bar Foundation; Member of Lawyers Journal Club; and President, Memphis and Shelby County Bar Association 1985-1986. In the legal community he was honored as a “Pillar of Excellence” in 2007 by the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. He was Chairman of the Board, Community Bank of Germantown; past Commander, Memphis Post #1 American Legion; past President, Tennessee Young Democrats; Trustee Emeritus, University of Tennessee; 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite; past President, Memphis Kiwanis Club; longtime member and past Senior Warden of St. George’s Episcopal Church, Germantown, TN; past President, Mid-South Fair Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bette Thompson Winchester; daughter, Robin Winchester Howard of Soddy Daisey, TN; sons, Richard L. Winchester, Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Cordova, TN, and John Thompson Winchester and his wife, Karen, of Germantown, TN; sister, Evelyn Winchester Day of Louisville, KY; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Winchester Heiskell, and his brother, James Ridout Winchester. The family will receive friends Monday, 5-8 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
