Richard Wallace Woodmansee's Obituary
Richard Wallace Woodmansee passed away at his home January 2nd, 2026. A lifelong Memphian, Rick gathered wisdom from Graceland Elementary to Hillcrest High in Whitehaven to UT in Knoxville. Then he brought it home to his family and friends.
Along with wisdom, Rick gathered items of value too. As a child of the Sixties, Rick collected vinyl record albums and guitars during his stint as a roadie for Target — that is the Memphis Band with Jimi Jamison not to be confused with the bourgeoise shopping mart which anyone with an ounce of class despises.
For years Rick worked at American Seafood in sales and distribution, which is fortunate for restaurant patrons as everyone knows seafood requires the attention of a careful mind. Such care and attention was a hallmark of Rick’s character. HIs attention was drawn to Porche at some point in his life. From there Rick knew what to do. He
found, purchased, restored, and then sometimes reluctantly sold vintage Porche cars — mostly the 911 model. This became a profitable passion over time so that he had to bring on a partner.
Other avocations or callings — not to be confused with “hobbies” — inspired Rick. No matter where, his reflex camera was little more than at arm’s length. In our world the instant gratification of selfies, sunsets, or supercilious scenes Rick saw nonsense.
Photography made sense to Rick. Taking time to wait for the perfect moment of lighting or contrast or movement, etc., the “click” of the shutter lens captured its object. And there were so many objects, and people, and places… you get the picture: Patience.
Patience was abundant in Rick. Time is all we have, and to be wasted bearing no fruit seemed pointless or worse. Those fortunate enough to have known Rick well will grieve, mourn his passing, and feel the heart ache of loss deeply. But we will be grateful for the chance we were given to get to know, love, and honor such a beautiful soul. And for those who did not know Rick well… Then be patient and someone will come along who, like Rick, carries virtue, kindness, and love and understanding like coins in the pocket of faded jeans. Jeans with holes in the pocket where these coins fall as they may along our path.
Rick is predeceased by his parents, John W. Woodmansee and Louise Crumpler Woodmansee.
He is survived by his brother LTG John “Jack” Woodmansee, and cousins, William David Woodmansee and John “Woody” Woodmansee.
A gathering will be Saturday, the 31st of January at Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119, from 1-4.
