Richard Ellis Vaughan's Obituary
Richard Ellis “Dick” Vaughan, 71, died September 27, 2009, at his home in Memphis, Tennessee.Dick was born November 28, 1937, in Weakley County, Tennessee, to the late Ellis and Elva Vaughan. He attended Dresden High School and Bethel University and was a member of First Baptist Church in Dresden.In 2008, he retired as Major Accounts Manager after forty-two years with Thompson Machinery in Memphis. He was a member of the Mississippi Valley Flood Control Division of the Associated General Contractors of America, served numerous terms on the local AGC Board of Directors and the Tennessee AGC Board. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Road Builders Association.Dick served as Executive Director of the Covington-Tipton Chamber of Commerce prior to joining Thompson Machinery. In 1965, he was Jaycee Young Man of the Year for Tipton County and one of three Jaycee Young Men of the Year for Tennessee. He served as a state officer for the Jaycees and was a member of the Exchange Club, Lions Club, and Civitan Club. He resigned commission as a Captain in the Tennessee National Guard.He is survived by his devoted wife of twenty-two years, Charlotte; sons Michael R. Vaughan of Boston and David E. Vaughan of Nashville; stepchildren Desiree Hurt, Sean Hurt (Julie), and grandson Jeffery Hurt of Dallas; sister Sara Ellen Reid (Ron) of Memphis; nephews Vaughan Reid (Kathie) of Olive Branch and Shaun Reid (Cindy) of Germantown, and six great nieces: Morgan, Susanna, Rachel, Sara, Maggie, and Katie Reid; cousins Clarice Vaughan Dibble of Richmond, Virginia, Muriel Parham, Dorothy Barcroft and Virginia Galyean of Memphis.The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 30, and a funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 1, both at Memorial Park Funeral Home, Memphis, TN. Burial services will be held at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden, TN. The family requests memorials are directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the charity of the donor’s choice.
