Richard David Hulshof's Obituary
Richard David Hulshof, 44, passed away on March 4, 2019, in Las Vegas, Nevada.Born August 8, 1974, in Hayti, Missouri, Richard was the son of the late Stephen Richard Hulshof and Dr. Karel J. Saalwaechter. He was the grandson of Herman and Stella Hulshof (Durbin) and Leon and Loreese Saalwaechter (Curtis). After a divorce, Stephen Hulshof remarried, and Richard was welcomed by a stepmother, Brenda, as well as four siblings. When Karel remarried, he gained a stepfather, Troy Cole. Richard also had a son named, Jackson.He was a veteran of the United States military, having joined the Army National Guard and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. He was deployed to the Middle East in the late 2000s, serving combat operations for two years in Afghanistan. After the death of his mother, he moved to Houston, back to Memphis, Tenn., and then settled in Las Vegas.Richard loved to travel. Besides visiting almost all 50 states, he backpacked through Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and donated a couple of years of his life with the Peace Corps in Paraguay. He studied for a year in England for graduate school and later obtained his Master’s Degree from the University of Memphis. As he traveled throughout Europe, he quite enjoyed the German countryside. He also lived for several years in Washington, D.C., before moving back to Memphis.In addition to his parents and grandparents, Richard was preceded in death by his aunts, Agnes Hulshof, Mary Ellen Trenery and Ann Schwendemann; and uncles, Edward Hulshof, and Louis Hulshof.He is survived by his son, Jackson Williams of Bolivar, Tennessee; stepmother, Brenda Thomas (Chester) of Kewanee, Missouri; stepbrothers, Tracy Hill (Angie) of New Madrid, Missouri, and Jeremy Hulshof of Hermitage, Missouri; stepsisters, Mischell Villa-Gomez (Edi) of Kewanee, Missouri, Carmen Beck (Mike) of Pevely, Moissouri, and Britnee Thomas of Fulton, Missouri. He also had an uncle, David Saalwaechter (Maria), of Spring, Texas; an uncle, Robert Hulshof (Donna) of Portageville, Missouri; an aunt, Theresa Bean (Thomas) of Lenexa, Kansas; and nephews, Nicholas McDougle (Abigail) of Jefferson City, Missouri and Caleb McDougle (Kendra) of Jefferson City, Missiouri as well as numerous cousins, relatives, and friends.Richard’s final resting place will be in Memorial Park in Memphis alongside his mother, Dr. Karel J. Saalwaechter, her husband Troy Cole, and his maternal grandparents, Leon and Loreese Saalwaechter.
